Tyrone Calico: An Explosive Force on the Field

Tyrone Calico, a wide receiver for Middle Tennessee State University, was a standout player during his collegiate football career. Known for his explosive speed and dynamic playmaking abilities, Calico left a lasting impact on the Blue Raiders and the college football world.

At 6’4″ and 220 pounds, Calico was an imposing figure on the field. He was a natural athlete, excelling in multiple sports throughout his high school career in Memphis, Tennessee. However, it was his speed and agility that caught the attention of college recruiters and led him to Middle Tennessee State University.

During his freshman year in 2001, Calico burst onto the scene, leading the team in receiving yards and touchdowns. His impressive play earned him a spot on the Freshman All-American team. He continued to excel in his sophomore year, earning All-Conference honors and setting a school record for receiving yards.

But it was during his junior year in 2003, that Calico truly made his mark. He set a new school record for receiving yards in a season with 1,069 and was named First-Team All-Conference. He also led the Blue Raiders to an 8-3 record, their best season in over a decade.

Calico’s senior year was cut short due to a knee injury, but he still managed to rack up over 500 receiving yards and six touchdowns in just seven games. Despite the injury, he was still recognized as one of the top receivers in the nation and was invited to play in the Senior Bowl.

After his impressive collegiate career, Calico was selected in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. He played four seasons for the Titans and recorded over 1,000 receiving yards and six touchdowns before injuries ended his professional career.

In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Calico was also recognized for his academic achievements. He was named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll multiple times and was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

In 2005, Calico’s outstanding performance on the field earned him a spot on the College Football Playoff Honors trading card, commemorating his incredible career at Middle Tennessee State University. It was a well-deserved honor for a player who left a lasting impact on the Blue Raiders’ football program.

Today, Calico continues to inspire young athletes as a coach and mentor. His speed, athleticism, and dedication continue to be an inspiration to all those who have the privilege of watching him play. Tyrone Calico will always be remembered as one of the greatest players to wear the Blue Raiders jersey and his legacy will continue to live on at Middle Tennessee State University.
